Roller Rockers

Roller rockers (installed)

Mechanics looking for better performance and longevity in their cams will often opt to install roller rockers to reduce friction.

Roller rockers are replacements for the usual rounded base rockers that "float" on oil (theoretically, they often are short on lubricant as the cams are generally the highest point on the engine). These rockers have a wheel or set of roller bearings to act as the fulcrum point for the tipping instead.

On vehicles with a central camshaft using pushrods (a common, older design), the rockers are an essential part of the engine's timing and control. Replacing the friction rockers with roller rockers and heavier springs often results in greater longevity and more precise control.

On newer engines, individual camshafts for each head are more common.

Installing Roller Rockers

Obviously, you'll need to get the correct ones for your engine make and model. Replacement is fairly straight forward and usually requires only a few hand tools, possibly replacement gaskets for the valve covers, and replacement springs (if any).

On most engines, the rocker is screwed onto the push rod, but only floating over the valve. So they can usually be lifted and (carefully) unscrewed from the push rod. Replacement is the reverse.

Your manual will have specific instructions, but normal procedure is to do one side, close it back up (to limit contaminants) and then do the other side. Springs are replaced after the rocker is removed and before the roller rocker is placed.
