Information

What about adjusting valves?

Many engines have hydraulic valve lifters that don’t requirement adjustment, but many others do, including newer Japanese vehicles. Overhead cam engines may need adjustments or replacements to the shims or rockers.

How can I tell I need to adjust the valves?

If a valve needs to be adjusted, it may make a noise, but there’s no guarantee. A feeler gauge will indicate if the clearance is too great, and the valve will open late and close early, which reduces the engine’s performance. If the clearance is too little, the valve will open early and close late, which will make the valve run hot and burn prematurely.

What are my options?

The vehicle can either be taken to a local dealer or repair shop, or a skilled owner can make adjustments. There are numerous automotive websites that advertise services. Some sites offer DIY instructions about how to adjust a valve. You can also purchase a repair manual or how-to book from a vendor online.
