Drive Shaft Problems

Online Auto Repair Manuals - Drive Shaft Problems

Information

What does the drive shaft do?

A drive shaft delivers power from a transmission to the vehicle’s axle or wheels. A rear drive shaft utilizes a pair of universal joints to maintain the power to the wheels at a constant level.

What about those grinding, squeaking, clicking or clunking noises?

Although a bad tire or wheel bearing can cause strange noises, it’s also very possible that the abnormal noises are caused by worn universal joints. If there is a vibration at high speeds, the spring clips on the yokes of the shaft may need to be adjusted. It is also possible that a universal joint only needs to be lubricated, but if it is worn, it will probably need to be replaced.

What are my options?

Although an owner may be able to diagnose and repair some problems, there’s a good chance the vehicle will need to be taken to an auto repair shop. There are automotive websites that advertise auto repair services and/or sell parts. Other sites offer free diagnostic instructions, and service manuals can also be purchased online.
