What is a driveline vibration?

A drive shaft transfers power from a transmission to the wheels. Since a rear drive shaft utilizes universal joints to keep the wheels at a constant level, any change in the operating angle of a universal joint causes a change in the rotational speed of the drive shaft. The greater the operating angle, the greater is the universal joint induced vibration.

What can be done to stop the vibration?

Vibrations may be solved with something as simple as lubrication to the universal joints. Otherwise, it could be caused by either improper universal joint angles or out of balance supporting end shafts. If there is a vibration at high speeds, the spring clips on the yokes of the shaft may need to be adjusted. A worn or misaligned bearing could also cause a problem, as could bad motor mounts.

What are my options?

The vehicle will probably need to be taken to an automotive repair shop, unless the owner is skilled and has the ability and the equipment to diagnose and repair the problem. There are online vendors who advertise auto repair services and/or sell parts. Other vendors offer free DIY diagnostic instructions, and others sell service manuals online.
