How does the engine intake work?

The process starts with the intake, where air goes through an intake and filter and then is mixed with atomized fuel. This mixture, via the intake manifold, enters the cylinder for combustion. The air filter prevents dirt and dust from getting into the engine. Engines that produce a great deal of horsepower may pressurize the intake system with either a turbocharger or a supercharger.

Why can go wrong with the intake components?

If the car produces white smoke, there is too much fuel in the intake, which might indicate a bad air filter. If the filter is clean, then it’s likely a fuel delivery problem. A good portion of fuel entering the cylinder is for cooling. Too little fuel and the engine may run too hot, and possibly detonate.

What are my options?

The vehicle can be taken to an auto repair shop, or the owner can replace air filters and perform some repairs. Automotive websites advertise repair services and/or sell a variety of parts. Some sites offer free DIY instructions, and others sell service manuals or other how-to books online.
