Information
How does oil help my vehicle?
Motor oil, or engine oil, lubricates the moving parts of an internal combustion engine and helps to cool the engine by carrying heat away from the moving parts. It also cleans and slows down corrosion. Motor oil typically contains hydrocarbons and some additives.
When does the oil need to be changed?
Since black soot and other particulates accumulate in the oil during operation of the engine and causes wear, the oil needs to be changed periodically. Quick lube shops recommend changing the oil every 3,000 miles or every three months, but some automakers now recommend not changing the oil in new cars until 7,500 miles, and some newer synthetic oils are made to support longer time periods between oil changes.
What are my options?
The vehicle can either be taken to a quick lube shop, or the owner can change the oil. There are numerous automotive websites that offer free DIY instructions, and advertise their services or sell motor oils.
