Problem Shifting Gears

Online Auto Repair Manuals - Problem Shifting Gears

Information

How does a gear shift work?

A gear shift is the mechanism for changing from one gear to another in a transmission, and a shift lever is used to physically change the gears. In a manual transmission, a clutch pedal is depressed in conjunction with changing gears.

What do I do if it is difficult to shift gears??

If it’s difficult to shift gears, there could be worn transmission parts or a binding clutch linkage. In a manual transmission it could also be a broken clutch cable, or leaking hydraulic fluid. Also, the transmission fluid level could be low in an automatic transmission or there could be a problem with the electrical controls for the transmission.

What are my options?

The vehicle may need to be taken to an auto repair shop or transmission specialty shop to diagnose and repair the problem. Dependent on the complexity of the problem, the owner may be able to diagnose and make minor repairs. Numerous automotive websites advertise repair services and sell parts. Other vendors sell service manuals or how-to books online.
