What is a rear differential?

Found on rear wheel drive vehicles, a rear differential consists of a set of gears found in the rear axle. A rear differential distributes power to the rear wheels. It also acts as a gear reduction by slowing the rotational speed of the transmission before it gets to the wheels.

How do I know something is wrong with the rear differential?

If there is a loud whining noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, it could mean there is a worn ring and pinion gear. If there is a lockup, it’s possible that the clutch packs in the differential have worn out and need to be replaced. Low differential fluid, or the wrong type of fluid, can also cause lock up problems.

What are my options?

The vehicle should be taken to an auto repair shop. There are automotive websites that advertise repair services and/or sell parts. Other vendors sell service manuals and how-to instructions online.
