Information
What does the starter motor do?
The starter motor powers a vehicle so that it will turn over and start. Once the vehicle is started, a switch opens, and the solenoid assembly pulls the pinion gear away from the ring gear, causing the motor to stop.
Could a problem with the starter cause my car not to start?
If you’ve replaced the battery in the car and it still won’t start, a bad starter or solenoid are likely culprits. A clicking or clunking noise upon trying to start a car can mean the solenoid needs to be replaced. If the starter makes a strange noise, it may need to be rebuilt or replaced.
What are my options?
The vehicle can be taken to an automotive repair shop, or a skilled owner may be able to diagnose and repair or replace a starter or related parts. Automotive websites advertise repair services and/or sell parts. Other vendors offer free DIY instructions or sell service manuals and how-manuals.
