Information
How does a transmission work?
A transmission transmits power from the engine to the wheels. Components like spring-loaded detent balls holds a shifter shaft in place, and gears can slip out of place when a driver suddenly takes a foot off of the accelerator pedal, especially when going down a steep hill.
What can make a transmission jump out of gear?
If a transmission slips or jumps out of gear, the problem may be caused by worn detent balls, or springs in the shifter shaft cover. A synchronizer is part of a manual transmission that allows the smooth engagement of gears. Synchronizer damage can also cause the transmission to jump out of gear.
What are my options?
The vehicle will probably need to be taken to a local transmission repair shop or auto repair shop. Numerous automotive websites advertise specialty transmission services and sell parts. Other sites offer free troubleshooting guides and DIY instructions. Some vendors sell service manuals or how-to books online.
