Information

What does a transmission do?

A transmission is connected to the back of the engine and sends the power from the engine to the wheels. Through various gear combinations, the transmission delivers power to the wheels while keeping the engine within a specified RPM range.

Why is my transmission slipping out of gear?

If a transmission keeps slipping out of gear, the problem could be caused by corroded or low transmission fluid, which in turn could be caused by leaky seals or gaskets. There can also be problems with a faulty sensor in a computer-controlled transmission, or a throttle cable in a non-computer-controlled transmission. In some older transmissions, a band may need to be adjusted.

What are my options?

An owner can check the transmission fluid or make minor repairs. The vehicle will probably need to be taken to a local transmission repair shop or auto repair shop for in-depth diagnostic or repair services. Many websites advertise specialty transmission services and/or sell parts. Other website vendors sell service manuals or how-to books online.
