Information
What does a water pump do?
A vehicle water pump is located in front of the engine and is essential for keeping the engine’s temperature regulated. If a water pump isn’t working correctly, the coolant stays in the block and heads and doesn’t get delivered to the radiator to exchange its heat. Overheating can lead to other problems, creates lots of wear and tear on a vehicle, and can even cause the engine to seize.
What happens to a water pump over time?
Over time, particularly on higher mileage vehicles, a water pump fails and leaks, and causes overheating. Since a damaged water pump can end up causing damage to the vehicle’s engine, it needs to be replaced if damaged.
What are my options?
An experienced home mechanic can replace a water pump, although a tight clearance may make it more problematic on some models. The vehicle can also be taken to an automotive repair shop. There are online automotive vendors who advertise auto repair services and/or sell new water pumps. Some vendors offer free replacement instructions, and others sell service manuals online.
