Without a rear view mirror, a driver wouldn't be able to see the through the rear window to the area back of the vehicle. Typically affixed to the top part of the windscreen, it rotates freely to allow adjustments by the driver.
When does a rear view mirror need to be replaced?
Like a microwave in the kitchen, it's easy to forget how important a rear view mirror is, until something happens to it. The tint and dimming capability may not be working correctly, or a mirror can get damaged in an accident. With some new mirrors equipped with GPS systems, BlueTooth, and/or entertainment systems, some owners want to replace the original factory-style mirrors for ones with the latest technological innovations.
