Information

What do I need to know about the steering system?

The steering system is crucial to changing and controlling a vehicle?s direction. The most common types of car steering systems are rack-and-pinion and recirculating-ball steering. Rack-and-pinion converts rotational motion of the steering wheel into linear motion to turn the wheels and makes it easier with gear reduction. Used by trucks and some SUVs, recirculating-ball steering uses ball bearings that recirculate through the gear as it turns and reduces friction and wear in the gear.

Why is my steering wheel wobbling?

Problems like vibrating, wandering, wobbling, or pulling to one side could mean the steering linkage is loose. If the power steering fluid is low or empty, the vehicle may make a groaning sound. In addition, low fluid or problems with other components could make it difficult to steer the vehicle. If components are replaced, the system will need to be re-aligned.

What are my options?

The vehicle can either be taken to a local dealer or repair shop, or the owner may be able to repair some problems. Some websites offer free DIY instructions, while numerous automotive websites advertise repair services and sell parts. Other sites sell service repair manuals or how-to books.
