Information
What does the transmission fluid do?
Transmission fluid acts as a lubricant and coolant for all moving parts inside an automatic transmission and also transmits power from the engine to the transmission. Typically red or green in color, the highly refined mineral oil helps in smooth valve operation, brake band friction, torque converter, and gear lubrication.
When should I change the transmission fluid?
An owner can check the transmission fluid with a dipstick. If it is low, or if the dipstick reveals dark or burnt-smelling fluid, it needs to be changed. If there is pooled red or green fluid on the ground under the vehicle, there is a leak. The owner’s manual will recommend how often it should be changed, but some auto professionals recommend changing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles.
What are my options?
Although it is a messy job, an owner can change the transmission fluid, or the vehicle can be taken to a transmission shop or auto repair shop. There are numerous automotive websites that sell transmission fluid and some explain how to change it.
