Information
How does the air filter work?
An air filter traps dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from the air and prevents it from entering the vehicle engine via the intake system. If an air filter is blocked with debris, it restricts the air intake to the engine.
When do I change the air filter?
In addition to restricting air intake, a dirty or clogged air filter can negatively affect a vehicle's gas mileage. If there is dust or dirt buildup on the filter, it needs to be changed. Some auto professionals recommend that air filters be changed every year, and in dusty environments filters may need to be changed more often.
What are my options?
A vehicle can be taken to a quick lube shop or an auto shop, but replacing an air filter is not a major job, and most owners can do it. There are numerous automotive websites that offer free DIY replacement instructions. Other sites sell air filters for specific makes and models.
