Information
What is a camshaft?
A camshaft impacts an engine's performance at different speeds. It uses cams and lobes to open and close the valves in each cylinder with precise timing, and it facilitates the combustion process.
What is that popping sound?
A popping sound or backfire noise from the engine are obvious symptoms of a bad valve train or a worn camshaft, as is dark oily exhaust. More subtle signs like poor gas mileage or bad performance can also indicate a problem. Valve springs can bind or break, and cams can get scratched or damaged. Also, the rocker arm assembly that drives the cams could be incorrectly adjusted. If insufficient oil is going to the engine head, increased friction or heat on the cams can cause excess wear and tear.
