What is a camshaft?
A camshaft impacts an engine?s performance at different speeds. It uses cams and lobes to open and close the valves in each cylinder with precise timing, and it facilitates the combustion process.
What is that popping sound?
A popping sound or backfire noise from the engine are obvious symptoms of a bad valve train or a worn camshaft, as is a dark oily exhaust. More subtle signs like poor gas mileage or bad performance can also indicate a problem. Valve springs can bind or break, and cams can get scratched or damaged. Also, the rocker arm assembly that drives the cams could be incorrectly adjusted, or if insufficient oil is going to the engine head, increased friction or heat on the cams can cause excess wear and tear.
What are my options?
The vehicle can be taken to a repair shop. Since the head may have to be removed to perform repairs, a DIY repair may not be feasible for most owners. There are numerous automotive websites that sell parts or offer repair services, and some explain how to perform repairs on specific vehicle makes and models. Service manuals or other how-to books can also be purchased online.
