When dealing with cleaning the engine I assume you are refering to the fuel system. The fuel system is very important to keep clean.
You can use additives, but the best way besides removing the throttle body would be to run some injector cleaners through a vacuum line. The brake booster check valve has a vacuum line connected to it that's easily accessed from the engine compartment.
With the engine running run a bottle of cleaner through the vacuum line, this will reach the injectors and clean them from the inside out.
Also spray some cleaner into the air intake hose this will reach the throttle body and help clean the throttle.
Also use a wire brush and clean the throttle port.
