2002 BUICK PARK AVENUE

I recently purchased this vehicle and the owner stated that I would have to replace the mass airflow sensor because the check-engine lite is on. Is it possible to do this myself or have a mechanic perform the maintenance.

Yurjasmine, Yes you can

Yurjasmine,

Yes you can replace the MAF sensor yourself and we'll tell you how to do it. The problem I'm havin with what you're sayin, is that you shouldn't buy or replace the MAF sensor until you are sure that is the problem. Is the check engine light on? Are there any drive-ability or performance problems with the car. Most times when an MAF sensor fails it will turn on the check engine light and set an error code. Auto Zone reads automotive error codes for free. What you should do is go to any Auto Zone store and have the cars PCM (aka computer) scanned for error codes. Then if there are any codes post them here so we can see them. From there we'll interpret the the code or codes for you, and advise you on what to do.

Have the computer codes read,

Have the computer codes read, write them down, and then have them erased. Drive the car for a couple of days or until the light comes back on and have the codes read again. If the same codes reappear then you'll need to have the MAf (or whatever is indicated as the problem) checked out. It could be a bad wire, loose connection or a host of other things.
post the code number here and we'll guide you further if needed.
