1990 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V-6 Auto. what will cause truck to idle extremely high for a long time at start up? Also, sometimes truck smells like something is burning and smells like it is over heating. Have flushed cooling system.Temp reads normal.

Dirty throtle linkage or missing return springs on carb. if not fuel injected can cause idle problems. Fix it with spray carb. cleaner or simular. As for the smell of burning/overheating, do you use your left foot on the brake petal. Don't if you do. Most people who use their left foot to brake with are unaware that they are usually driveing around with their brakes engaged. This shortens the life of your brakes and really pisses people behind you off because they never know when you are really going to stop or slow down. Your brake lights are allway flashing off and on, that is if the brake light bulbs aren't burnt out from being on all the time.

for high idle it might have a vacuum leak. or a idle air control motor problem. for the burning smell check for oil leaks especially around the exhaust manifolds. with a 1990 truck the stamped steel valve covers tend to rust out and leak unto the exhaust manifolds

have the codes read at a place like autozone. Remove Idle Air Solenoid and clean it's passages and the valve itself.
