1995 Saturn SL2 Automatic. Will not shift into gear when first started. Must warm up, sometimes for 20-30 minutes. Engine starts right up and runs fine. Can't engage gear shift lever when engine cold. Pushing on brake pedal doesn't help.

when was last service fluid / filter change? the fluid is at proper level. transmissions produce codes and shop should give free estimate.

15 year old auto trans.

15 year old auto trans. should have been serviced long ago. If it wasn't then it sure needs it by now. Take it to a reputable well known transmission shop, not to your Uncle Joe with a shade tree in the back yard. Get an estimate or two if they are available. Could be just a clogged transmission filter and\or low fluid level. A fluid change and new filter might cost $75 - $100 but could save you from haveing to buy a new transmission.

these trans have a screw on filter (looks just like an engine oil filter. If its clogged it will resemble these same issues.

Linkages (underneathe the

Linkages (underneathe the center console) may need to be lubricated/adjusted (gear shift lever problem). There is also a switch which allows you to shift into gear when stepping on the brakes--its' underneath the center console also (most models). check it's operation when the console is removed.
