2004 chrysler sebring 2.4 dohc when cranking, crankshaft is turning, but timing belt isn't. Belt is not broke or worn.

Ddex,

A 2.4 is an (INTERFERENCE ENGINE). In terms of timing belts, do you know what that (MEANS)?

Tell us in (DETAIL) how you came to the (CONCLUSION) that the timing belt (IS NOT) broken?

Have you (RULED OUT) a (JUMPED TIME )issue?

Stripped teeth on a timing belt is a good reason for a (JUMPED TIME ISSUE).

Wouldn't you say so ?

Removed top cover. When

Removed top cover. When cranking engine, crankshaft turns, as well as alternator and air compressor. But timing belt is not turning. Since belt isn't turning,do I need to remove harmonic balancer and bottom covers to see if teeth are slipping?

ya, it sounds like you'r

ya, it sounds like you'r going to have to take it apart all the way down to the belt.
i'd put a belt on it and start it, if it fires right up and runs sound for a 1/2 min., put it back togather and run it.
i've done a bunch of 2.4 liter broken belts, only replaced valves once, and under diff. cond..
let me know if you need repair info.

Thanks, I was afraid of that.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. Only prob is not having gear puller.

call pep boys, autozone,

call pep boys, autozone, advanced auto, they rent the puller, if you buy belt there, they might not charge for tool rental.

check the crank gear key,

check the crank gear key, just remove bolt and try to turn gear.
the 2.4 engin will not bend valves, only the 2.0 liter.
let us know what you found.

Right. Exactly as mws919 has

Right. Exactly as mws919 has stated.

JUST ONE THING !!!!

2.0 (WAS NOT) an engine option in 2004.

Did you swing a 2.0 into your car? (That would be a pretty good trick, since you claiming the engine is a 2.4).

2.4
2.7
3.0

Were the (ONLY) "OE" engines available in 2004.

2.4 and 3-0 are (INTERFERENCE AND WILL BEND VALVES).

2.7 is (NOT) interference, and (WILL NOT) bend valves.

ddex, I wrote this for you,

ddex,

I wrote this for you, because I thought it may help you in the future. I purposely kept it simple and basic, but it really is "Mechanics 101" material.

The advantage of an interference engine is that it generates a higher compression ratio more easily. Trying to design an engine with 10.5 to 1 compression without interfering is nearly impossible, but it is possible. You would have to angle the valves so they would be more parallel to the travel of the piston. This would crowd the room for the spark plugs and would create a need to make the flow into and out of the chamber more inline with the travel of the piston as opposed to swirling around the chamber. That swirl allows the flow to not have to slow as much and steals less energy from the flow. This increases overall engine efficiency, flow efficiency, and allows for a higher compression ratio. Valves open further in an interference engine and project further into the combustion chamber than in a 'free-running' engine. This allows outside air at atmospheric pressure flow faster into the combustion chamber through the larger valve opening. The engine can therefore inhale more air, be a little smaller, and still create as much power while reducing its manufactured cost and also guaranteeing future repair business for its dealer. If a rubber timing belt breaks by not being replaced soon enough, some of the valves stuck in their open position will collide with the top of the pistons, thereby breaking or irreversibly damaging one or the other or both.

the coggs are stripped on the

the coggs are stripped on the belt the the crankshaft timing sprocket is spinning in the now "smooth' area of the belt. remove as much of the timing cover as necessary to confirm this.

that's it, my bet

that's it, my bet
