97 F-150 intermittent heat/coolant overflow

97 F-150 has mostly no heat and then starts get very little or sometimes none at all. Coolant pushes back thru the radiator cap. The coolant jug has a smell of exhaust. Truck runs fine. Lose a little bit of coolant but not much. This is a 4.6L v8 ,vin no.6, by the way. I changed thermostat to have same problem. Am I lookin at a blown head gasket or intake gasket?

Driver, Here's a few

Driver,

Here's a few different ways to test for blown head gasket.

Do the test below and post the results. You can also do a compression test and post the results or a cylinder leak down test and post the results. You can also buy a block tester kit from a well stocked auto parts store, and post the results. Make sure you follow the instructions on the kit precisely.
Remove all the spark plugs. Get a cooling system pressure tester and pressurize the cooling system to about 15 PSI. Leave the system pressurized for several hours. Now lay down some clean paper towel along the cylinder heads where the spark plugs were. Crank the engine over for a few seconds. Since the spark plugs are not in place any antifreeze that leaked into the cylinder will be blown out onto the clean paper towel. Examine the paper towel for the telltale signs of antifreeze and you will be able to tell which the guilty cylinder as well.

it's normal for the coolant

it's normal for the coolant level to rise in the resovoir when the engin gos from cold to hot.
is the blower motor working and has good air flow?
when the engin is hot, are both heater core hoses the SAME temp?

Driver, Bump?
