99 FORD Escort Check Engine Light Goes on and Off - No Code
I have a 99 Escort SE with 82,000 miles on it. In the past 4 months the entire exhaust system has been replaced, along with spark plugs, wires, coil and fuel filter replaced. After oil change and replacing fuel filter, (one week ago) the car still has problems on acceleration at low speeds(as though it's losing power), but this is intermittent. When driving up steep hills at 35 mph the Check Engine light will start flashing, and once the car is on a level surface the light goes off.
This AM the car ran rough at start and at the first stop sign (1/16th of a mile from driveway) stalled. The CE light came on. After two start attempts it started up but ran rough for the next 1 1/2 miles. When the car was parked and ignition stopped, it made a groaning noise like an empty stomach.
Started the car after the school day with no problems noticed. Ran a code check despite no check engine light illuminated. No codes showed. Car ran fine on 2 mile trip home.
Obviously there is something going on. Where do I even start?

check fuel pressure and
check fuel pressure and timing
bbaclan, I agree with
bbaclan,
I agree with checking the fuel pressure, because the problem could a failing fuel pump. The timing is monitored and adjusted (and readjusted) as needed via the ECM, so there is nothing for you to do or check in terms of the timing. Checking the fuel pressure requires the use of a fuel pressure gauge, and for us to help you further you gotta post the Static, Residual, and Running fuel pressure PSI values. You also gotta check for exhaust leaks and engine vacuum leaks. Exhaust leaks is a very strong possibility because, you said the entire exhaust system was replaced. Since the exhaust system was replaced, your problem could be a Catalytic Converter issue. The catalytic converter is a major part of the exhaust system. When the exhaust system was replaced can you remember if an OE converter was installed, or was a universal converter was installed?
Exhaust system was replaced
Exhaust system was replaced from cat. converter back. (Front exhaust pipe w/flex - new H.D. Muffler - 1 tail spout - 2 HD clamps)
How much can I expect running fuel pressure diagnostics to cost? Obviously if it's a fuel pump issue I need to keep costs down as much as possible for a car that has a $200 value.
Honestly, the car engine runs really nicely except for the acceleration issue. It's great for my 18 yo to tool around town with. But is it worth the $700 fix of a fuel pump?
Also, I'd think they would
Also, I'd think they would have replaced Cat Converter if it seemed to be failing, no?
BB, If you gotta rely on
