Are there any cheap/reasonable/simple options to reduce oil consumption such as using a onetime/long-term oil additive or convert to synthetic?

if it's using oil, synthetic

if it's using oil, synthetic will not help.
what year,make,model and engin size?
there is a few things that you can do to cut it back a bit.

Not much (if anything).

Not much (if anything). Usually involves some engine work.
Does the car smoke or does it have an oil leak (or both)?

to do a oil consumption test,

to do a oil consumption test, replace the air filter , pvc valve and change oil to factory recommended oil, marking the dip stick to the level, now drive under normal conds. for 500 miles and check level, check agin in 1000 miles. top off oil, the amount of oil it takes to bring the level that you makked is the usage.
compare it to the usage chart to see if it's excessive.
your owners manual should have the info, if not let me know, i'll post it.
