1. Disconnect the fuel level sensor. Check the voltage coming from the combination meter. There should be close to battery voltage present.

2. Reconnect the fuel level sensor. Sweep the float up and down. The voltage should vary from high voltage with the float down to very low voltage when up or in the full position.
Potential Causes: Combination Meter
Defective Fuel Level Sensor
Fuel Level Sensor Wiring

Tech Tips: The fuel level sensor should be an easy install. There is no relearn procedure or programming needed. The fix will depend on what the voltage reading is. If the voltage is reading high the fuel gauge should not read full.
Diagnostic Codes: P0463

Thanks Tim, I'll give that a whirl. So I'm looking for an inverse relationship between fuel level and voltage. Do you think that higher ethanol levels in the fuel could be wreaking havoc on this sensor? I've seen some horror stories particularly marine, about ethanol- eating non-stainless parts etc. What's your take? We just had a batch of fuel come thru Tidewater 50% ethanol. Didn't know if you thought that might affect sensor?
