have a 96 olds with a 3.1 engine. had the egr valve replaced but the check engine lite came back on relative soon after the switch. my quetion is: after a new egr valve is installed, assuming it was installed correctly must your computer have a software u

swing by a parts store and have them read the code and then clear it to see if it returns. often the code will go away after 3 or 4 starts if the repair is fixed properly.

the egr was replaced and not to long after the check engine lite came on again. i dont know what the original code was but now it's p0401 insufficient egr flow i was told by another mech (not the installer) that a gm dealer must reprogram the computer. any help's appreciated

i never had to flash the ecm

i never had to flash the ecm after replacing an egr valve. most flashes are for updates, and in less it had a light on from new, i donn't see the need for new operating software. the only to test the egr valve, is to turn it on with a scan tool. if it can stumble and stall the engin it's ok. at least for that code. i'll get back to you. mws919
