i have a 2000 grand prix gt and the rpms wlll go to zero and my trac lite will go off and periodictly my check engine lite comes on what could be the problem

Hi, Thanks for choosing 1040.

Hi, Thanks for choosing 1040. My name is Tim West.
You have a bad crank sensor or possible bad wiring.
There is an RPM signal that is sent to the ABS system if that is lost the "TRAC" light will come on.

1. Check for a square wave from the crankshaft sensor (24x) behind the crankshaft balancer, a 3-wire sensor. One wire is power, another is ground and the third is the signal. There is another crank sensor (7x) on the side of the engine that is used for spark and keeping the engine running.
2. If a power supply or a ground supply problem is found at the 24x crank sensor, disconnect the camshaft sensor and retest. If the power or ground now are ok at the 24x crank sensor, replace the cam sensor.
3. If the power and ground supply is ok at the 24x crank sensor, check the wiring between the sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in the air cleaner housing.
4. Visually inspect the harness by the A/C accumulator carefully. If the harness is contacting the accumulator in any way, access the harness and repair the damage.
