I have a 2002 ford explorer 4.0 liter 6cyl. Have a squealing noise when my wife started it up. Lasted for a while after it warmed up the sound went away. Sounded like it came from the alternator pulley.

Doesn't necessarily have to

Doesn't necessarily have to be the alternator. You gotta narrow it down. Could be a belt (and or) a power steering pump or a tensioner problem. Take off all the belts, then use an electric drill to spin the alternator power steering pump and tensioner and observe where the noise is coming from. You can also spin by hand< by I prefer the dril method. if you're not familar with the drill method, let us know.

Jmunguai, I have to agree

Jmunguai,

I have to agree with Big Block. A belt would be the most common cause for your complaint. Check to see if it is dry rotted or cracked.

Another thing you can try is just a TOUCH of silicone spray or even a little soap and water on the belt while it is running. If the noise goes away it is most likely the belt.

Please don't let someone sell you on "belt dressing".

Let us know what you find. Thanks.

Found out it was the tension

Found out it was the tension pulley it was broken had to replace it and the belt.
