I went out to start my car and it wouldn't start, I later noticed acid underneath like a water leak, why did this happen and do I need to purchase a new battery? How can I avoid this from happening again?

How old is the battery. Could be at the end of it's life. Is it hot were you live as it is here in Texas 104-107 will take a tole on older battery's. Also check to see that you'r altenator is not putting out to much voltage. Most auto part stores can run a free check for you. The acid you see is comming from a crack in the old battery. Must be replaced after checking out the system as I mentioned.
