Im working on a 92 suburu legacy station wagon The shifter wont come out of park without using the over ride button. I replaced the brake light switch It still wont work right what can be causing this

by chance did you check the fuses?

Fuses are good, linkages are tight, whats the next step?

Try this: 1) check FUSE #22

Try this:
1) check FUSE #22 (15A) in the main fuse box [left side of engine compartment]
2) Check FUSE #12 (20A); FUSE #1 (15A); FUSe #2(20A) in the fuse/relay box [behind left side of dash]
3) Ensure that the brake lights work when the pedal is depressed. Gain access to the SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID [located at the base of the shift lever). disconnect solenoid electrical connector.
4) Turn the ignition key on and press the brake pedal. Use a test light to check for power at the SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID connectors' RED wire. {Two wires connect to the shift lock solenoid--a RED/GRN wire (power) and a BLK wire (ground)}. Check the black wire to be sure that it has a good ground. If power is present (at the right time) and there is a good ground, solenoid should operate and/or click when brake pedal is depressed. If it doesn't operate, replace solenoid.

There is also a
Automatic Transission shift Lock Control Unit --behind the dashboard, to the left of the heater case. However, this module controls 3-5 different components and you would have other problems if it were to go completely.

Let me know if this works or if you need more help.
