have the computer scanned for codes.
Sounds like the engine is flooring (too much gas). may be a bad coolant temp sensor. scan the computer tosee what code comes up and post it here.
was told the car is too old
was told the car is too old for the computer to test unless the check engine light is on

The above is BS. Find another mechanic if you are relying on this guy to resolve this problem for you. If not (and your trying to resolve it yourself) then post the level of your skills and abilities. We need to know this so that we can post the most accurate repair information possible. At this time, is there anything you can tell us that you have ruled in or ruled out? Without exaggeration there is easily over 100 different items that could be causing the problem you are describing. Use the link below to read the error codes yourself. Post any and all error codes that are present so that we can see them and help you further. If the link doesn't work for you, or if you have difficulty with it let us know.

Donshull6, Big Block is
Donshull6,
Big Block is right. Don't know who told you that but it is bad information. Did they even take into consideration that the light could be blown? If it is blown and terminal D (in Big Blocks link) is available you can use a test light there instead of viewing the engine light.
Some of the cars prior to 1996 were called OBD 1.5. If you don't have a terminal in the B cavity (on Big blocks link) look for an OBD 1.5 or OBD II 16 pin
connector. Like the one in the link below.
http://www.auterraweb.com/obdiipinout.html
If you have this connector, most OBD II scanners (like the one the parts store have) can check for codes.
Also press the gas pedal ALL THE WAY DOWN and try and start the vehicle. You have to be ready to let off. I don't want you scattering the engine but if it does try to start with the pedal to the floor let us know.
Post any info back here. We'll be glad to help.
when the engine is running,
when the engine is running, does it produce black smoke from it's tail pipe?
we checked all the wires and
we checked all the wires and hoses and added gas treatment and water remover in in and it seemed to run better
Don, Better or great (problem
Don,
Better or great (problem gone)?
Don, (YOU SAID) we checked
Don,
(YOU SAID) we checked all the wires and hoses and added gas treatment and water remover in and it seemed to run better
Specifically ALL of which wires and ALL of which hoses? I'm only askin because your answer is not addin up or makin any sense. Also not a water remover or gas treatment problem.
Water Remover????
Gas treatment????
Was it Stevie Wonder that told you about both????
Whatever you've done is not gonna last. At the very best it's a temporary repair. You gotta start answerin the questions that are still unanswered if you want to repair this problem permanently?
Don, is it still doing OK?
