Thought it was automatically loaded.
1986 Chrysler Lebaron convertbile. 4 cyl 2.2L turbo. At idle the cars volt meter reads in the middle, above idle and at driving speed the volt meter is pegged at 18 volts. I replaced the alternator, swapped out the battery, with no change. Autozone sold me a regulator...can't find one on the car. Your thoughts? Bobby.

the regulator is internal to

the regulator is internal to the alternator. alt. might be fine, it's what is causing the charging system to stay in high out put mode. alt. works between 9 and 18 volts. depending on the voltage, amperage can be sent to or pulled from the batt. it's the amperage that's the key. low voltage at a sensing point will cause this cond. frist you will have to take a meter reading from the batt. to confrim the gauge readings. if high disconnect the sensing wire from alt. and take another reading, if same as frist replace alt. if not power train control moduel may be keeping it high. and that is a bit more trickey to diag.
