When I start my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee V-8 for the first time of the day or after is sits for 6+ hours the engine makes a "pouff" sound kinda like a small backfire and then it is fine. Sometimes my jeep runs as if it is going to stall or cut out.

Have you scanned the Jeep for codes? Not a bad idea to get it scanned.
It sounds to me like the distributor cap might be accumulating moisture or be carbon tracked.
I would recommend replacing the plugs/ wires w dist. cap and rotor. Basically a tune up.
Scan the vehicle for codes and make sure there are no known faults first.
If there are codes in the computer get back to me for further information.
