2000 dodge ram 1500 4 wheel drive has no reverse?

Hello I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 pick up and all of a sudden i got up one morning and when to back up and had no reverse, with no warning are signs of going bad that was in 2005 and still drive it today with no reverse,

I talked to the transmission shop and they said the dodge 46re has been prone for this type of failure, not sure what they call the part that needs to be replaced some kind of plunger are selinod for changing from 1st gear to reverse gear which is the same gear? I know it is on the drivers side of the transmission?

If any one can help please let me know I want to identify the parts so I can replace it thanks!!!

Hello Bob, Take what you’re

Hello Bob,

Take what you’re being told at face value only. The problem you are describing could be a number of different things. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a shift solenoid. It could be a wiring or circuit problem or a wire connector problem with a shift solenoid and not necessarily the solenoid itself. You really need to get the TCM scanned and post any stored error codes. You may have a problem with the low reverse rear band. The servo that applies the band can crack, and that allows fluid to leak from the circuit instead of correctly applying the band. The problem is this would normally result in a slip and not a sudden and complete loss of reverse. On the other hand if the band was severely worn it could also cause no reverse, but there would be some slipping first. You could also have a problem in the valve body not feeding the rear servo but that would be rare. A planetary gear train problem is also possible. The splines between the rear annulus and the intermediate shaft in a 46RE do wear down. In time enough material will wear off the splines. That causes the splines to weaken enough to the point where they slip and strip. This will cause a complete and sudden loss of reverse.

Thank You
Helene

Bob, I agree with everything

Bob,

I agree with everything stated above. You should consider a second opinion as well as a code scan.

Also, here is a link that supports the details mentioned.

Post back here with any other info or questions. We'll be glad to help. Thanks.

Thanks for all of the advise

Thanks for all of the advise !! but I still don't get it if the reverse and 1st gear are the same then do you still think it could be The splines between the rear annulus and the intermediate shaft? I think it more likely to be the servo how much could that cost and what do you call that servo? so I can find it at the parts house I have checked all of the wiring connectors they seen fine.
And that was my post on just answer.com!! they where not much help

Thanks
Bob

Hello Bob, Not only is

Hello Bob,

Not only is guessing completely unprofessional but it's not fair to you. TCM codes could tell us something. Scan and post any that are set.

Thank You
Helene

Helene, I agree that guessing

Helene,

I agree that guessing is a bad idea and that all components should be tested before replacement. I'm sure that you would never stray from those ethics when working on someone's vehicle. I also agree that we could use more info in an attempt to help him but it is what it is.

I'm sure you mean well but the fact remains that this is his own personal vehicle. A professional gets paid for what they do. I seriously doubt he is punching the clock on his repair. All we can do is give him recommendations and answer his questions. It is up to him to decide what he thinks is "fair".

I'm thinking you didn't mean it the way it sounded but to me it came off a little harsh. Sorry. Just my opinion. Thanks.
