Check the transmission module
Check the transmission module for DTC's and the ECM for DTC's this will probably give you an idea where to start in your diagnosis, possible causes would be fluid lvl which requires a scan tool anyway and a special tool for filling the transmission, or the vehicle could be in a "limp home mode" transmission program cause by a transmission DTC. unless there is a failure in the clutches inside the transmission, internal transmission clutch issues are usually symbolized with a incorrect gear ratio fault. but there are many DTC's that could put the transmission into "limp mode"
