2002 hyundai elantra gls the battery just drains while the car is not in operation what could be the problem and how do i change the alternator

you have a short - to locate it you will need a test lite - disconnect ground battery cable - connect test lite between cable and bolt on engine - lite will be on - pull 1 fuse at a time til lite goes out and that will be the shorted system - will it run when battery fully charged? will it jump start? have chaging system and battery checked first.

If you didn't leave anything on. have the alternator checked at autozone or somewhere like that. they will check it for free. There has been cases where a bad diode can allow a battery to drain overnight. You can do this either before or after you've completed the procedures in the other posts.
