is it cranking and not
is it cranking and not starting or nothing happens when key is turned?
It's not cranking, there is
It's not cranking, there is no response from the engine at all. The only noticeable response is a single "click" from the relays next to the fuses beneath the dash.
Thanks for your help by the way! I wanted to give you some more info about what happened, so here's the whole story:
The car hasn't had any starting problems before. Recently, my stereo was stolen (one that I had installed). After that, my clock wasn't on and I assumed a fuse had blown but I didn't change it right away. Yesterday, I went to install a new stereo (same JVC model as the one I installed before) and even used the same harness from the last one, which had not been stolen. I didn't change any of the wiring in the car. I plugged the radio up and it didn't get power, so I found the blown fuse and replaced it. As soon as I did, my factory anti-theft system activated, so I had to deactivate it by closing the locked doors and open them from the outside. I had tried turning the key in the ignition to deactivate it, and realized that the car wouldn't start with the alarm going off, so after I deactivated the alarm I started the car to make sure it worked. It did.
The clock was working again, the stereo had power, and the car would start. However, I couldn't get sound from any of the speakers. I checked all of my connections from the stereo to the harness and couldn't find any problems or mistakes, and then I figured I'd try hooking up the power antenna (which I had left unhooked until then). I did, but it didn't make any difference with the speakers. I unhooked it again, and the rest of the stereo for that matter, still trying to figure it out. Very shortly after that I went to start the car again, and it wouldn't start.
I have power, and everything seems bright. I did jump the car for 10 mins anyway. I've tried some simple sounding solutions with no luck: removing the negative terminal from the battery for hours, turning the key left and right multiple times in the door and trunk locks, trying to start the car from neutral and drive to diagnose the neutral safety switch, and of course I've checked all of my fuses and fuseable links. What I haven't checked is the relays next to the fuses in the dash, I don't know how to tell if they are good or not.
I've also checked the ground to or from the battery, the connections to the battery, and I've checked around the steering column and the shifter for any loosened connections, but I haven't found anything suspicious. I can't see how it could be something other than the alarm or the antenna since the car worked fine before, but then again I am not very smart about cars (I owe anything I've said here to today's internet research).
Thanks again for your help!
Extra Credit for addressing the speaker problems too, but that is definitely not my priority!
Edit: I forgot to mention that the security light on the dash does something different now. It is supposed to come on for 20 seconds or so after the doors are closed and locked, and then go off to indicate the alarm is set. Currently it flashes when the doors or hood are open, and when everything is shut and locked it just stays off.
i hate to tell you this, but
i hate to tell you this, but i'd say put the old radio back in and put all wires ect.. back the way they were and then see if it starts.
