Garb,
As I recall, the 1996 monte carlo didn't come stock with a key fob that has a remote start option. A factory vehicle anti theft system will usually not be affected when you dissconect the battery. Do you have an aftermarket alarm/starting system? If so, you will want to check with the company that provided the system.
I will say that many contributors on this site will not help you bypass a security system. I'm not trying to offend you but the fact that your question came in at around 12:30 AM EST will not help your case. Sorry. I have no reason to believe that you have bad intentions but I will have to respectfully decline. Please don't take offense to this. I wish the world was one where we didn't have to worry about things like this. Thanks.

I don't want to bypass the damn thing. I want to reset it. I can start and drive it using the remote starter.
And you are right about the 96 not having a fob.
Sorry about the typo. I have sleep apnea and as you say, it was early this morning. I just woke up again and checked the title. It is a 1997. Only had it a couple of weeks and the last owner didn't take very good care of it.He also took the phone that came with it. I hope to replace it some day.
Now that I am awake. Can you help me reset the anti-theft device so that I don't have to use the remote?

Garb,
I went back and read your post again so here's an update. Disconnecting the battery should have nothing to do with a reset. Accurately speaking, and for that matter, there is no such thing as a reset under the conditions you are describing. If anything it sounds like a voltage spike of sorts took place when you disconnected the battery. If that's the case then check for theft system's circuity for a:
Blown fuse or fuses
Failed relay or relays
Security system module for signs of burnt circuits.
Is the system "OE" or aftermarket?
Thanks, Big Block 409 and
Thanks, Big Block 409 and also thanks to drivability.
I am very glad that you have reservations about giving information to anyone who seems as suspicious as I did last night. Good work.
It is OE. I am pretty sure it means factory. I disconnected the neg. post. and when I reconnected it I did hear a beep or maybe a few beeps.
I am almost 70 years old and can in no way be mistaken as an auto mechanic. So I will look for fuses relays etc. My bro. in law just called and said he has a book on it. Maybe that will help show the way.
Garb, Actually, most
Garb,
Actually, most aftermarket alarms do the "beeping". Again, even on a 1997, I don't recall a "remote start feature" option for a Monte Carlo LS. They had key fobs but they didn't start the vehicle. I could be wrong or it might have been a dealer add on. Does your fob look like the one in this link?

By saying this car came with a remote start I meant it had one when I bought it a month ago. Actually it is a funny shaped little thing that says python on it. Looks like a cobra to me. It also has a button for AUX. Haven't got around to checking this one out yet.
Garb, It's aftermarket. Check
Garb,
It's aftermarket. Check this link below.

You might want to try contacting Python for product support. If they can't/wont help you you'll probably want to see a reputable pro. I don't recommend a dealer. You can try a car stereo/alarm shop but remember that some of them employ entry level techs. They should be able to repair, replace or bypass the system.
The auxiliary button can usually be programed to perform miscellaneous functions. Wire up the system to a coffee maker and you can have a fresh pot waiting for you when you go out to your car this winter :-)
Let us know what you find and how it turned out. Thanks.

Yeah, mine is the 413. All I had to do to reset the anti-theft was lock and unlock the doors using the remote. I sincerely hope it works to start my car this winter. If it doesn't work well I will let you know.
Thanks for all the help and putting up with my ignorance.

Garb,
You're welcome and we're glad we could help. I also want to thank you for understanding our hesitation to answer certain questions.
You mentioned ignorance. We are all ignorant and it is nothing to be ashamed of. The good news is that we can usually overcome ignorance. It's just unfortunate that stupid is not as temporary.
Let us know if you need our help in the future. Something besides bypassing an alarm at 12:30 AM would be a plus :-) Thanks.
