Front Disc Brakes on 2000 Subaru Forester

I'm trying to fix the front disc brakes on a 2000 Subaru Forester. They've been dragging/scraping on the rotor for a little while, and yesterday they locked once or twice. It's just the left wheel that's doing it; the right one is fine. If anyone has insight into what is wrong or has any information on how to fix these brakes it would be helpful. The PDFs of the factory service manuals would be nice, too. My email is 000133914@pirates.ncmissouri.edu

if you let them go after

if you let them go after hearing noise / scrapping i bet your caliper is over extended and rotor is trashed. go to autozone.com - register - add vehicle and go to repair section for step by step with pics.

Danielalberts,

You stated the pads have been dragging and scraping on the rotors for a while. In other words how long have you been driving on neglected worn out pads? The dragging, grinding, and scraping noise you hear is because you have driven on the pads past their wear indicators. At the point the caliper was forced to hyper extended itself (out of it's bore) to simply do its normal function. In other words, by neglecting the pads for so long, and by continuing to drive on them (when they were beyond worn) you damaged the caliper. Once the caliper is hyper-extended it will never return into the bore at the proper position or time interval. In other words to repair the issue you are describing, you must now replace the left caliper.
