how do I narrow down my slpping transmission?

I have a 1998 Mercury mystique gs with an automatic transmission, recently the overdrive off light started flashing and the button on the shifter doesnt seem to be working,at first it would come on and go off but now it has been on for two days straight. The fluids are Ok, so now I am open to suggestions.I have a Haynes manual but it doesnt seem to talk about it, the only thing close is the selector lever position sensor, or is it possible that I can fix the mashed in overdrive button?

Mercury, Try replacin the

Mercury,

Try replacin the button first. To do that you gotta remove the shifter to remove the button from the shifter. Then you gotta get a new button from a dealer and install it in the shifter. Another route you can take is to get another complete shifter (with a button) from a junkyard and install it. If after that, the problem persists, and the light is still flashin then you're gonna have to get the TCM (Transmission Control Module) scanned for error codes. I don't mean the PCM (aka your cars computer). I mean the TCM which is separate from the PCM. Just think of the TCM as a separate computer for your cars transmission. The transmission in your Mercury is electronically based. It relies on shift solenoids and electronic sensors to shift at the proper intervals of time. Just get the TCM scanned and post any error codes so we can see them. Don't buy any parts or sensors. We'll tell you what the codes mean and what you gotta do next.
