For the automatic transmission.

With engine at normal operational temperature and idling, set the park brake, move the gear selector from reverse to drive 3 or four times.
Put the selector in park.
Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean.
Put the dipstick back into the transmission dipstick tube.
Remove the dipstick a second time and read the fluid level on the stick.
Add to the fluid checking it each time after adding 1/4 quart (if necessary)until it reads FULL.
