How is an a/c accumulator for a 2001 Dodge Ram2500 properly removed? Any special tools required for flange separation from the line conections?

Where the accumulator

Where the accumulator connects into the firewall and into the evaporator the lines should disconnect with some elbow grease.
Once you have the accumulator disconnected use the plugs that came with the new accumulator to plug up the lines coming from the firewall. It's very important not to let dirt get in.

Use some pag oil for lube to ease the new pipes together.
Once you have the new accumulator installed Evac and recharge the system.

You should have this professionally done. The more 'atmospehere' removed from the system the colder the system will be. Be careful not to over fill the system. Let me know how this goes.
