How to tell if you need a blower motor on a 2000 grand am
Ok. I have a 2000 grand am. The heat/ air isnt working correctly. I bought a new resistor, tried to change it myself, gave up for now. What the blower motor does is come on for a few minutes, then go off, then come back on. Itll come on if you bang on the blower. Does it sound like I need a new motor?

Joan,
You stated that the heat/air is not working properly. "Not Working Properly" is to broad a statement.
Exactly how are you defining "Not Working Properly"?
What exactly is the problem?
What test or tests did you do to come to the conclusion that your problem warrants the replacement of the resistor?
Sorry, it comes on when i
Sorry, it comes on when i start the car, runs for a few minutes, then stops. Then randomly starts working again. I was reading that the resistor is a common issue, so thought id try that. Then a mechanic told me that if you hit the motor and it comes on, its probably a bad motor. I just wanted to ask for a second opinion.

Joannakelly,
Yes it is likely a bad motor but it would probably be a good idea to test for good power and ground to the motor when it is failing. The link below might help you to replace the motor if needed.

Let us know what you find or if you have any questions. Thanks.

Joan,
Could very well be the motor, but it could be the resistor as well. Loose (and or corroded) POWER (and or and or) GROUND connections (at the resistor) could be the problem. Givin it the old wire harness jiggle test (at the motor) would be good idea as well. Post your findings.
Thanks. It was the blower
Thanks. It was the blower motor. I changed it out and it works great now. Not a hard fix. The heat stopped working last winter and I cannot believe I went without for a 40 dollar part and about 15 minutes. Again, thank you guys.
Joannakelly, Glad you got it
Joannakelly,
Glad you got it fixed and that it was something simple. Thanks for posting back.
Glad to hear you got it
Glad to hear you got it figured out Joan, and that we were able to help.
try wiggling the wires going
try wiggling the wires going to the motor and it's resisstor, if it starts cutting out, check the connectors for looseness and discoloring, if so replace the connector.
