I have a 1996 chevy lumina sedan with 3.1 engine. a few days ago it stalled and when we start it it will only run when we are pushing on the gas. is this the fuel pump or could it be something else. if it is the fuel pump do you have a diagram?

Welcome to 10w40.com.

This could be a result of several possible faulty parts and I have listed them below.

Likely Causes

Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve -

An IAC valve that is sticking in its bore, slow to react or is not being controlled properly by the powertrain control module (PCM) will cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

Throttle Body -

A throttle body that has carbon built up around the throttle plate can cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve -

An EGR valve that is commanded on at idle, has carbon holding the valve open or stuck in the open position can cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

Overlooked Causes

Fuel Pressure Regulator -

Fuel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator into the engine will cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

24X Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor -

An erratic signal from the 24X CKP sensor may the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

Fuel Injectors -

Fuel Injectors that are open, shorted or restricted can cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor -

A CKP sensor that produces an erratic signal can cause the engine to stall when the throttle is released.

Good luck.
