I have a 1999 Mercury Sable with automatic transmission. The lever won't shift out of Park. Also, the brake lights do not work although the rear lights and emergency flashers work. Are thes problems related. How do I fix them?

problem is in the shift interlock system. have the brake switch checked.

interlock is bad or going bad . there is a slot under steering colum slide a small flat hear screw driver into it and it shoul release it.. if not the 2wire switch is easy to replace and only $6 at dealer.....and do you have a remote starter on that car? that would also cause the interlock to seem bad
