choke light is wired in to the charging system wiring from the factory. a bad alternator (or anything which keeps the battery from being charged) will turn on the choke light.

Has the charging system been repaired?

Hello 86, You have started

Hello 86,

You have started five threads for the very similar problems on your 86 Monte Carlo SS. As a result, those five threads have left you (most likely) very, clearly confused. In an attempt to help you, and lessen the confusion, I am posting a response here for you to read. This was a response I posted for you on one of the other five threads you started. You most likely missed it because of the five threads that have been started. Before applying this response, you must first rule in or rule out the basic fundamental principals that apply to the starting and charging systems and circuits of your Monte Carlo.

Here’s some information. First of all is the carburetor OE? Next thing is getting you alternator checked would be a good idea. Auto Zone can do that for free. On an OE Monte Carlo choke, the choke wire is coming off a pressure sender located on the rear of the block, at the rear edge of the intake manifold. The sender has a two prong wire connector. One wire goes to the electric choke, and the other wire goes to the light bulb on the right side of the dash. To test this, put a jumper wire across the female connectors inside the plug of the pressure sender. The light should go out? These pressure senders are known to go bad. If the light doesn’t go out, then the pressure is not bad. Now the problem is due to insufficient oil pressure. You may need a need new oil pump, but try cleaning out the pump first. The choke light is connected to the oil pressure function. The choke sensory circuitry gets its power from the oil pressure monitor. If the oil pressure drops too low (or to nothing), the choke light will come on. This mostly happens when coming to a stop quickly, because what little oil is present in the oil pan ends up going forward, away from the oil pump pickup point. Service Engine Soon (SES) lamp flicker can sometimes be mistaken for the choke light coming on momentarily. Both are the color amber. There are no ECM circumstances that would cause the SES lamp to come on momentarily. If you suspect SES flicker, pay attention to the lamp. It’s probably the choke lamp flickering, due to what has been stated above. Ultimately, the solution is to look at your oil level and correct the level if it’s too low. If you have an oil leak, find it and fix it. If your choke light is on constantly and your oil pressure is normal, check the power circuitry from the oil pressure monitor to the choke, or the choke itself.

Thank You
Helene

thanks for your help but my

thanks for your help but my oil sending unit is located above my oil filter in the left bottom side of my motor i changed some fuses around and that got my choke light off
