nissan pulsar 1993, the fan/cooling system is playing up. the car is overheating to the point where the water in the overflow is boiling, if i turn off the engine and start it up again then the fan starts. any ideas?

check the thermostat probably

check the thermostat probably stuck closed

Check the cooling fan relay

Check the cooling fan relay (located in the underhood fuse/relay box), make sure that it is tight and it's contacts are clean.
Check the cooling fans connector (at the fan itself)

if all else is good could be a dirty/corroded temperature sensor
