Sunfire Heater Wiring

Hi - I was reading a post from last year in which you offered to email a 1999 Sunfire wiring diagram. I have the same problem as the original poster - keeps blowing the 30 amp fuse for the heater blower (the one undr the hood - the HVAC fuse in the dash is fine). I have replaced the blower motor & relay to no effect - simply keeps blowing the 30 amp fuse. This is obviously a short somewhere. If I disconnect the connector from the speed control switch, the fuse does not blow, so one could reasonably conclude that the switch is at fault, but all points of this switch are simply switched to ground, so I don't see how the switch could be causing the problem. Can you possibly send me the wiring diagram? I have a 99 Sunfire.

Thx & regards.

Yaardvaark,

You don't need a wiring diagram. You just don't realize that you found the problem already. Your statements below prove it.

(You said) If I disconnect the connector from the speed control switch, the fuse does not blow,

(You Said) so one could reasonably conclude that the switch is at fault.

(You said) but all points of this switch are simply switched to ground, so I don't see how the switch could be causing the problem.

The switch is the problem. Not all contacts on that switch are supposed to be switching to ground. You're reading all grounds because the switch has failed internally, and the VOLTAGE part of the switch is shorted to ground. Replace the switch.

BB 409, Thank you much for

BB 409,

Thank you much for the response - can you humor me by sending the schematic anyway? I have a background in electrical engineering & would like to verify before replacing any more components & it's getting really cold here!

yaardvaark,

You have a background in electrical engineering and you need a (SCHEMATIC) for a (THREE CONTACT SWITCH)?

(DON'T TELL ME)

You're the (HEAD) electrical engineer for "General Motors".

Hint:

Center contact is voltage. Give you some candy if you guess right at as to what the (REMAINING) two contacts might be? :-)
