truck

My 1996 Chevy Silverado truck died while I was driving. Now, it turns over, but will not start. The gas gauge says 1/4 tank, but I sprayed starting fluid in the "carburator" anyway to see if it would start and run until it burned off,but it didn't.Also,it occasionally backfires when attempting to start. We recently changed the spark plugs,(about a month ago)so it shouldn't be that. What would be the most likely reasons?

Daddy, Are you sure your gas

Daddy,

Are you sure your gas gauge is workin? Just because it say's a 1/4 of a tank doesn't mean you have a 1/4 of a tank. Also it's back to basics here buddy. That means:

Addin 10 gallons of gas.
Usin a fuel pressure gauge to confirm fuel pressure.
Usin an in-line spark tester to confirm spark.
Checkin fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible links.
Rulin out a timing chain problem.

Turn the key to on but don't crank the engine. let us know if you hear the fuel pump come on? You can also check for a circuit to the fuel pump with voltmeter (Don't Use A Test-Light).

First back-probe the test leads on the fuel pump wire connector. Now have a helper turn the key and crank the engine while you watch the voltmeter. If you're not readin a solid 12 volts, then you know you got a circuit (or connection) problem.
